Assisting collegiate athletic departments with the creation of a transformative experience for student-athletes.
Over my 25 years as an athletic administrator, nothing was more important than making a positive impact on the lives of student-athletes. My career began as a graduate assistant athletic trainer and evolved into senior administration. Along the way I provided direct health care, hired staff and coaches, implemented educational programming, and made budget decisions — always with the student-athlete experience in mind. From Athletic Performance to Student-Athlete Advisory Council, the experience for the student-athlete was far greater upon my departure from three Division I institutions than upon my arrival.
A sample of my impact at the University of San Francisco:
Areas of Expertise
Athletic Performance
Developed a cohesive athletic performance team at the University of San Francisco. The four discipline model (Sports Medicine, Sports Psychology, Strength & Conditioning and Sports Nutrition) functioned as one unit to holistically train each athlete as an individual.
Results: Upon my arrival at USF in 2011, the university was spending $450K on medical expenses annually. By 2019 the university was spending $160K annually for seven straight years, a savings of over $2 million.
Sports Medicine
My approach includes an extensive evaluation of university and athletic department needs in order to create a successful athletic medicine division. Following the development of my philosophy through experience at Villanova, Michigan State and the Indianapolis Colts, I held leadership positions at Monmouth University and the University of San Francisco from 2002-2019. Scope included hiring and mentoring of an effective staff that met the needs of each sport program, the development of policy and procedures, and the addition and subtraction of team physicians and other medical providers.
Results: Metrics from USF: 102 MRIs ordered in 2011, 38 in MRIs ordered in 2018. 59 surgeries in 2011 and 23 in 2018.
Student-Athlete Leadership
I’ve inspired student-athletes to use their voice and initiate change within the athletic department and their university as whole. Created the Peer Leadership Program at Monmouth University that changed the social culture of the athletic department. This group received several accolades including presenting their initiatives on multiple occasions at the NCAA’s Apple Conference as well as the NCAA National Convention. At USF, created a sustainable and effective SAAC Program that fostered the current WCC representative for the NCAA SAAC.
Student-Athlete Educational Programming
A history of creating programming that resonates with student-athletes and provides information that positively impacts their day to day.
Example: The USF Iron Chef Competition
Thought Leadership
There are many challenges associated with the student-athlete experience. I draw from my extensive experience and creativity while monitoring industry trends to provide valuable insights most athletic administrators are not able to glean.
DEVELOPING HIGH PERFORMAnce Teams
A history of identifying and mentoring talented professionals to create stability and excellence for the institution. The members of the Monmouth University Athletic Performance Team I established in 2002 are still in place in 2020, delivering value to the university and progressing in their careers. Many of my hires are in leadership positions throughout collegiate and professional sports.
Technology
The evaluation and addition of technology that made athletic staffs more efficient and effective in communication and care of the student-athlete. Technology expertise:
Electronic Medical Records
GPS Tracking
Athlete Monitoring Systems
Injury Prevention and Student-Athlete Evaluation
